When is the point reached at which the colour applied to the canvas becomes a picture? When does the colour material transform into an independent picture? When does the application of colour take on a life of its own and follow a plan? I ask myself these questions again and again during the painting process.
All questions are forgotten when my picture surprises me. Then the picture has achieved an independence of its own and has gained a distance – to me and to the viewer. A space is created, one that was not there before.
